10 Tips to Protect Your Pets from Haze

It’s haze season in Singapore. That does not bode well for our pets. As a pet owner, you should be aware on how to protect your dogs and cats from haze, whether you’re living in Singapore or in any part of the world, especially Southeast Asia, where there’s haze between July and October. Here are 10 tips for caring for pets during the haze season.

10 Tips to Protect Your Pets from Haze #1 Keep Pets Indoors

Haze is outside, in the air. It’s not advisable to have your pets stay outside your home and have them breathe the polluted air. It might cause respiratory problems for them.

#2 Use Air Filter / Air Conditioner at Home

Air filters and air conditioners are your best bets to clean and purify the polluted air that may seep through your house. Polluted air will be filtered out by air conditioners that double as air purifiers too. You and your pets will be better off turning it on when you’re at home.

#3 Keep the Fan On

When you’re out of the house, keep your fans running for them. That way, the purified air inside your house circulates well enough for your pets.

#4 Limit Time Outdoors

Pets need their exercise. If you let your pets out by themselves, you’d have a difficult time getting them back in, unless of course, if they’re obedient enough. Walk them out for a limited amount of time instead. And yes, there are air filter masks available for both cats and dogs.

#5 Spray Water in a Fine Mist

Not all pets can be indoors, especially the large ones. If this is the case for you, spray water in a fine mist all over the space they roam around in. This will trap the dust particles in the air and will combine with the water droplets that fall to the ground.

#6 Provide Fresh Water Every Time

Water exposed to air pollution is bad. Make sure that your pets have fresh water all the time. Add ice cubes if you have them handy. It will refresh your pets too.

#7 No Smoking or Vaping

Aside from adding from haze when you smoke or vape, pets have strong reactions against smoke. If you can’t help it, smoke or vape far from them. Or if you can stop it all together, the better for you and your pet.

#8 Use Pet-specific Eyedrops

Relieve your pets from itchy and watery eyes by having pet-specific eyedrops handy.

#9 Check for Signs of Illness and Discomfort

Pets exposed to haze usually show signs of discomfort when they have watery eyes, having trouble breathing, and they cough a lot. Bring them to your veterinarian if these signs persist.

#10 Wipe Off Your Pets

If you’ve taken your pets for a quick walk to get their regular exercise (don’t forget their air filter masks), wipe their fur off when you get home. Use non-alcoholic wet wipes to get rid of pollutants and allergens from their fur.

Haze season can be stressful for your pets. Make sure that you give them utmost care. Give them
