Breed Spotlight – Boxers

B

oxers rank as the 7th most popular dog in the United States, according to the AKC.  It’s not surprising that these charming dogs rank so high.  They love children, are incredibly patient and make wonderful family members.

Adding a Boxer To Your Family. Boxers are wonderful family dogs.  They are happy dogs who love to play and romp and have a special affinity for children.  However, as with all breeds, you should know your dog breed’s ups and downs so you can make an informed decision.

Boxers are full of personality and energy, making them ideal partners for families who love to play with their dog. However, if not channeled properly or given training at an early age, this personality and energy can be overwhelming, especially for smaller children.  Boxers need playtime at the park, long walks and lots of interaction and consistent training. This is not a ‘once a day walk’ kind of dog.

Boxers can have some hygiene traits that some folks may find less than savory.  Boxers drool more than some other breeds.  Your Boxer dog will want to give you kisses and snuggles.  Carrying a cloth handkerchief may save your cheeks from excessive slobber.  Boxers also have a tendency to snore and some of them suffer from excess gas.  Feeding your Boxer a high quality diet can drastically improve the gas, but as a breed, they are prone to it.

Boxers mature later than some other dogs, often not really maturing until 4 or 5 years old.  Their bodies will be big (around 70 pounds at maturity) but they will be young at heart.  Proper training, socialization and exercise will go a long way towards making your Boxer a good citizen.

All purebred dogs have certain health problems that are specific to their breed.  Make sure you know what your breed might be prone to.
