Once hatched, baby king salmon remain hidden in the gravel beds to protect\u00a0themselves\u00a0from predators. Life under the sea<\/b><\/h2>\n

As it starts to migrate towards the ocean, the king salmon grows its\u00a0scales\u00a0and\u00a0dons a\u00a0silvery\u00a0coat. To adjust\u00a0to\u00a0the sudden change of environment, the adult king salmon will\u00a0also tend\u00a0to feed heavily to ensure its survival in the sea.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As\u00a0sea temperatures\u00a0rise, king salmon\u00a0will\u00a0dive deeper toward\u00a0the cooler parts of the ocean and feed on\u00a0smaller\u00a0fish living\u00a0there.\u00a0They\u00a0will stay\u00a0in deep waters\u00a0for up to eight years before journeying back to\u00a0their\u00a0original spawning grounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The way back home<\/b><\/h2>\n

Scientists say that homing is done by tracing \u2018pheromones\u2019 or chemical signatures of the king salmon\u2019s home stream. All salmon have an extremely keen sense of smell, and the King Salmon can smell chemicals down to one part per million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By\u00a0then, the king salmon\u00a0will have\u00a0started\u00a0to undergo tremendous physical changes,\u00a0most noticeable of which is their\u00a0changing color\u00a0from silver\u00a0to maroon or red. A male king salmon’s jaw will\u00a0likewise\u00a0resemble\u00a0a hook-like shape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
