Breed <\/span><\/b>h<\/span><\/b>istory<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The origins of the Bernese (or Berners as they are fondly called) aren\u2019t well-documented. It\u2019s been said that they were brought to Switzerland by Romans around 2,000 years ago. Berners were general-purpose farmers\u2019 dogs and preserving their kind was not a priority that there came a point near the end of the 19th century when they were almost extinct.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Good thing that there were Swiss dog fanciers who valued the many good qualities of Berners that letting their line go extinct would be a mistake. By 1907 Berners began to thrive, thanks to Professor Albert Heim, who formed the Swiss breed club. \u201cBerners were once again a favored farm dog, and they also caught on as companions with Swiss householders,\u201d <\/span>according to the American Kennel Club<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Berners set foot in America in 1926 when a Kansas farmer<\/span>, Isaac <\/span>Scheiss<\/span>, <\/span>imported a pair<\/span> but railed to register them with AKC. The breed was officially recognized in 1937 though, when Glen Shadow imported a pair and had them registered with AKC.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

General appearance\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

PetCoach<\/span><\/a> describes Berners as: \u201c<\/span>a sturdy and muscular dog with a large frame. Their distinctive tri-color coat is either black\/tan\/white or black\/rust\/white. Many members of the breed have a \u201cSwiss cross\u201d or white cross on their chest when viewed from the front. They also can have a \u201cSwiss kiss\u201d or white mark just behind the head on the neck. Their fur is long and dense so expect heavy shedding, particularly in the spring and fall.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Temperament<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Berners are \u201c<\/span>a calm and patient dog. As befits his background as a working dog, he is self-confident and alert. He\u2019s a great watchdog but should never be aggressive<\/span>,\u201d according to <\/span>Vetstreet.com<\/span><\/a>. Because large breeds have a long puppyhood, a Berner puppy might get to be a handful. Berner puppies are \u201c<\/span>highly active, mouthy, and rambunctious<\/span>. <\/span>Berner pups can chase, nip, or bite in play, and that can be frightening for or dangerous to a young child, even though the dog doesn\u2019t mean any harm<\/span>,\u201d cautions Vetstreet.com<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is a <\/span><\/b>Berner <\/span><\/b>right for you?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

As with large breed dogs, a Berner\u2019s <\/span>size may be prohibitive if you have babies and toddlers at home.<\/span> T<\/span>hey <\/span>moderately <\/span>shed hair. They <\/span>are usually peaceful with other pets, is gentle-natured, polite, and non-aggressive. Berners carry a high price tag on them which may be prohibitive, considering that their \u201caverage lifespan is shorter than other breeds in their size range,\u201d according to <\/span>yourpurebredpuppy.com<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Common <\/span><\/b>h<\/span><\/b>ealth <\/span><\/b>i<\/span><\/b>ssues<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201c<\/span>So many <\/span>[Berners] <\/span>are lost prematurely to hereditary cancers, or to crippling elbow dysplasia or hip dysplasia, or to an emergency gastrointestinal syndrome called bloat.<\/span> T<\/span>here’s also epilepsy, heart disease, hereditary eye diseases that can cause blindness, autoimmune diseases, blood-clotting disease<\/span>,\u201d enumerates <\/span>yourpurebredpuppy.com<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Not counting the breed\u2019s disposition to histiocytic sarcoma, the most common cancer inherited by Berners.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Berners <\/span>have a<\/span>n average<\/span> lifespan of around <\/span>six <\/span>to <\/span>eight <\/span>years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Diet and Nutrition<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Berners<\/span> \u201c<\/span>should do well on a high-quality dog food, whether commercially manufactured or home-prepared with your veterinarian\u2019s supervision and approval<\/span>,\u201d <\/span>according to AKC<\/span><\/a>. Any diet will suffice as long as it\u2019s appropriate to the dog\u2019s age. Just keep in check <\/span>his weight and calorie consumption to avoid obesity. Berners are easy to train so treats are also important. No overfeeding though. Also, fresh water should be always available for Berners. Consult your vet to ensure the right nutritional requirements are administered to your Berner.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
