Many people believe that dogs are carnivores or natural meat eaters. However,\u00a0generations\u00a0of domestication have made dogs\u00a0<\/span>omnivorous,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0even if they are descendants of the wolves.\u00a0This makes them perfectly adaptable to eat\u00a0<\/span>fruits and vegetables<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While this seems unbelievable, and several people in social media have often expressed as much online, cases like these do exist.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes, these can\u00a0manifest when a\u00a0dog\u2019s body\u00a0is\u00a0constantly exposed to\u00a0allergens like animal\u00a0proteins for\u00a0a long time. In the process, immune responses develop.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While animal-based proteins truly offer a wealth of benefits, allergies or sensitivities to meat can still develop.\u00a0Here\u2019s how they happen and how you can help your dog live with them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are\u00a0food\u00a0allergies<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It should be noted that\u00a0allergies are different from intolerance. The latter simply means that the dog will have trouble digesting certain ingredients, while the former happens due to\u00a0the body\u2019s\u00a0immune responses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On<\/span>\u00a0the other hand,\u00a0<\/span>food allergies<\/span><\/a>\u00a0occur when the immune system mistakenly identifies a food ingredient as a harmful one.\u00a0<\/span>These can range from\u00a0meat\u00a0sources and dairy, among others.\u00a0Food allergies in humans can manifest through itching and skin hives. Similar symptoms happen to dogs with the addition of sneezing and even red eyes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Identifying and avoiding the allergen is the fastest way to adjust your dog\u2019s diet. And it’s worth starting with meat protein.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How do meat proteins cause allergies<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because animal proteins are common, prolonged exposure may lead to your dog\u2019s immune systems misidentifying these as harmful, according to veterinarian\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Justin Shmalberg<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Allergic responses\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0normally\u00a0happen the first time these proteins are ingested.\u00a0This\u00a0is why novel proteins like Kangaroo, Venison, or\u00a0Brushtail\u00a0Possum are sometimes fed in place of Beef. The immune system has to encounter proteins more than once for\u00a0these proteins\u00a0to be identified as potentially harmful.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Given that most dogs eat\u00a0Beef or\u00a0Chicken, this risk can\u2019t be ignored.\u00a0In fact, a\u00a0<\/span>2016 study<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by the Biomedical Central Veterinary Research stated that\u00a034% of\u00a0dogs\u00a0are\u00a0reported\u00a0to have\u00a0allergies\u00a0to\u00a0Beef.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The risk goes even higher for certain dog breeds. A\u00a0<\/span>2018 article<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0The Merck\u00a0Veterinary\u00a0Manuals\u00a0lists\u00a0Golden Retrievers, Dalmatians,\u00a0and\u00a0Labrador Retriever\u00a0among the most allergy-prone of dog breeds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How to help your dog live with allergies<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While novel proteins may be a viable solution for dogs to get nutrition from animal meat, there are times when meat allergies become too severe for your pets. Such was\u00a0the case\u00a0with\u00a0our founder’s Golden Retriever, Zack.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
