For people who got infected through saliva, bites, and scratches from animals who have it, watch out for symptoms like fever and pain and tingling sensation on the infected area or wound.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 59,000 fatalities a year<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/rabies\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, more than 95% of human rabies happen in Africa and Asia. With 99% of which are caused by dog bites.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Almost half of the victims are children below 15 years old.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Hawaii is rabies-free<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hdoa.hawaii.gov\/ai\/aqs\/animal-quarantine-information-page\/rabies-quarantine-frequently-asked-questions\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the only state in the US<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that is free of the disease. Thanks to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hawaii\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">current law that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">requires to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">quarantine dogs, cats, and other carnivores <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for 120 days or 5-day or less rabies quarantine.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Incubation period varies<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Typical incubation period of the virus is three to eight weeks. But it can sometimes take nine days or as long as several years in some rare instances. As its name suggests, muscles become slowly paralyzed, starting at area of the bite or scratch. Coma develops and death happens eventually.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Cats spread rabies more than dogs<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While dogs are associated with spreading the disease, more rabid cats are reported than rabid dogs in the US, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/features\/dsrabies\/index.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> This is due to the fact that cats are always in close contact with both people and wild animals, including ones that spread rabies, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eg.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> racoons, bats. That said, rabies is more common in cats than dogs. In fact, in 2010, 48 states including Puerto Rico reported to CDC 2 human <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5120392\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">rabies cases<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and 6,154 rabid animals.
