N<\/span>ow that summer is winding down, we can feel a touch of fall in the air.\u00a0 Long summer days are already shortening.\u00a0 The evening air is tinged with a chill, a reminder that in the next few weeks the leaves will begin turning, the air will get colder and the kids will finally go back to school.<\/p>\n

With kids going back to school, it\u2019s a good reminder that our pets can learn something too!\u00a0 The animal shelters and rescue groups are full of good dogs and cats that simply weren\u2019t given the proper amount of training to be good citizens.\u00a0 You owe it to your pet to give them an education in good manners.<\/h4>\n

I teach my child to say please and thank you and to respect adults.\u00a0 I expect the same level of politeness from my dog, though she has yet to learn to talk so saying please and thank you are replaced with sitting when I request and walking nicely on a leash.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s talk for a minute about some basic doggy manners.\u00a0 Look over this list.\u00a0 If your dog has not mastered these skills, it might be time to enroll in a doggy obedience class or spend some more time working with your pooch.\u00a0 These skills are taken directly from the AKC Canine Good Citizen test, a comprehensive test originally designed for service dogs.\u00a0 If your dog is a rescue, it may take some extra time or some professional help, but we believe that all dogs can get there!\u00a0 They just need your love, encouragement, discipline and consistency!<\/p>\n

  1. Accepting a friendly stranger \u2013 Your dog should stand or sit next to you while a stranger comes up, greets you, shakes hands and has a short conversation with you.\u00a0 Your dog should stay in position without showing overt signs of resentment, shyness or aggression.<\/li>\n
  2. Sitting politely for petting \u2013 Again, this is done with a friendly stranger.\u00a0 Your dog should not show signs of shyness or resentment.\u00a0 Your dog should also not then try to jump up and lick the face of the friendly stranger or bite.<\/li>\n
  3. Appearance and Grooming \u2013 Your dog should be able to hold still and accept handling and grooming.\u00a0 This makes the job of your groomer and your vet so much easier!\u00a0 Your dog should handle grooming with its regular brush and should also allow a stranger to handle his ears and paws.\u00a0 The dog does not need to hold perfectly still, but must accept the handling.<\/li>\n
  4. Walking on a Loose Lead \u2013 Your dog should be able to walk on a loose lead.\u00a0 Pulling is not only a bad habit, but can become downright dangerous if the dog can out muscle the handler.\u00a0 Even on a little dog, constant pulling on a collar can cause permanent bruising to their trachea.\u00a0 Teaching your dog to walk on a loose lead is a basic skill that we believe all dogs should have.<\/li>\n
  5. Walking Through A Crowd \u2013 Basic manners on your dog means that your dog should be able to walk in a crowd without mauling (with happiness or aggression) anyone.\u00a0 Your dog should not jump on people, strain on the leash or bark incessantly.<\/li>\n
  6. Sit and lay down on command and stay in place \u2013 Teaching your dog to sit and lay down on command aren\u2019t just for show.\u00a0 A dog that is sitting is not jumping up on someone.\u00a0 Teaching your dog to stay can be combined with teaching your dog a command to go to its bed and stay there.\u00a0 You never know when you\u2019ll be in a situation where these commands will come in handy.<\/li>\n
  7. Coming when Called \u2013 Dogs should come when called.\u00a0 This is the hardest thing to actually train for and the AKC allows you to use encouragement to get your dog to come to you.\u00a0 Most of the time, a higher pitched, excited voice can help encourage your dog.<\/li>\n
  8. Reaction to Another Dog \u2013 This tests your dog\u2019s reaction to other dogs.\u00a0 Your dog should not react to another dog on a leash.\u00a0 You must be able to approach another person with a dog, shake hands and have a short conversation without your dog showing excessive interest in the other dog or handler.<\/li>\n
  9. Reaction to Distraction \u2013 This test is designed to show your dog\u2019s confidence.\u00a0 If an object is dropped nearby or a jogger runs in front of the dog, the dog is not to overly react.\u00a0 No barking, running away or aggressiveness.<\/li>\n
  10. Supervised Separation \u2013 Can you leave your dog with someone else?\u00a0 Is your dog a mess when he can\u2019t see you?\u00a0 This test requires that you hand your dog to someone else for three minutes.\u00a0 Your dog shouldn\u2019t bark, whine or pace.\u00a0 Your dog can show mild nervousness or agitation but should be able to keep itself under control.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \"\"<\/a>So now you have the list.\u00a0 What does your dog need work on?\u00a0 Or is your dog already a Canine Good Citizen?\u00a0 I really like this list as a starting point for good training and socialization techniques.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just important that our dogs sit and stay, it\u2019s also important that they are properly socialized.\u00a0 Socialization is the \u2018please\u2019 and \u2018thank you\u2019 of the dog world when it comes to manners.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t
