Advantages of a Vegetarian Dog Food Diet

“Many dogs are allergic to more than one thing,” according to an article in webmd.com. “Most common allergens are beef, dairy, wheat, egg, chicken, lamb, soy, pork, rabbit, and fish.” One or more of these may trigger an allergy in dogs.

Genetics

Inherited allergies are more common in purebred dogs than they are in mixed breeds, but all dogs can be at risk for inheriting allergies from their parents,” according to an animal wellness blog. “Often genetic traits like allergies are passed down in purebreds because there is not enough genetic variance to eradicate the allergic predisposition from one generation to the next.

The usual suspects

As mentioned above, the usual allergens affecting dogs come from beef, dairy, wheat, and chicken. Notice that among the four mentioned, wheat is the only plant-based protein. And because the usual suspects are meat protein sources, plant-based proteins can be a very good source for your dogs (with the exception of wheat, of course).

Advantages of a vegetarian diet

A vegetarian diet for sensitive dogs may be composed of plant-based proteins that will mitigate his allergies. Here are some of the veggies that may be found in a vegetarian dog food and its advantages

Peas – High-fiber content from peas helps prevent obesity in dogs. It is also rich in antioxidants that support eye, skin, and heart health.

Soya – High isoflavone and antioxidant content in soya helps improve the skin and coat of your dog.

Sea kelp – A natural source of vitamins A, B1, B2, C, D, and E as well as minerals like zinc, iodine, magnesium, iron, potassium, copper, and calcium. All of which supports the immune system of your dog.

Rice – a great source of energy which acts as fuel for your dog’s body, maintaining his energy levels throughout the day.

Added taurine to the formulation

As a preventive measure for DCM, taurine should also be part of his vegetarian diet. It will also make the vegetarian diet a well-balanced meal for dogs who have allergies.
