Breed Highlight – German Shepherd

One of the United States’ most popular dog breeds, German Shepherds are intelligent and hardworking dogs who enjoy doing jobs for the companion that they feel most comfortable with.

Breed History

A relatively new breed, German Shepherds’ origin dates back in 1899 when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer led a group of breeders to create the ideal herding dog from a German lineage.

Their efforts resulted in today’s German Shepherd dogs (GSD) which is currently the 2nd most popular breed in the United States according to the American Kennel Club.

Until today, GSDs are the most preferred breed for police and military operations around the world.

Is a German Shepherd right for you?

German Shepherd dogs exude an aloof personality and typically do not make friends easily. But once they do, GSDs can become very attached and loyal to their owners, especially if it’s the person who takes care of them. GSDs value spending time with those that they are close with and may become lonely and anxious if left alone for long periods of time.

Because GSDs are bred to become the ideal German herding dog, they are hardworking, highly intelligent, and they tend to flourish more while on the job. Try teaching him these next-level tricks or other cool skills like getting the newspaper every morning or joining you hike in mountain trails.

If you’re thinking to get a German Shepherd, remember to start socialization early and take time to give him enough jobs and exercise to avoid excessive barking and chewing.

Common Health Issues

Overall, German Shepherd dogs are healthy and active dogs. However, GSDs may suddenly experience bloating which can become life-threatening if not handled properly. Ask your veterinarian about bloating symptoms and the steps you should take in order to prevent or cure this health problem.

Read the official health statement from the German Shepherd Dog Club of America for a list of recommended health tests for your GSD.

Diet and Nutrition

The German Shepherd dog is a highly active, working breed. It’s best to avoid giving him table leftovers that may mess with his digestion. Ideally, give your GSD a high-quality dog food formula that is suitable for dogs of all life stages and provide him the right nutrition.
