Breed Spotlight – Chihuahuas

Chihuahuas are the smallest breed in the world.  Chihuahuas have gained popularity and fame from popular dogs such as the Taco Bell dog and Paris Hilton’s famous little purse dog,  Tinkerbell.  Despite their adorable size, Chihuahuas are not a fashion accessory and need the same training and care as a regular sized dog.

Breed History

Chihuahuas are thought to have come to Europe from Mexico with Christopher Columbus, possibly crossing with a Chinese Crested to produce the smaller size Chihuahua that we know of now.  Chihuahuas are an ancient breed, tracing back to as early as the 1590s and thought to be a descendant of the Techichi, a domesticated dog from Mayan times.

Is A Chihuahua Right For You?

Chihuahuas are a big personality in a little package.  These little dogs have a terrier personality which can be feisty, loyal and sometimes stubborn.  Most Chihuahuas are adverse to cold and will require jackets for inclement weather. Though they can be a good family dog, it’s important to train and socialize them early as well as teach your children proper handling of small dogs.  These dogs are not good for rough and tumble families.

Genetic Problems to Look Out For

Like most small breeds, Chihuahuas have their fair share of possible problems. This could include breathing difficulties from a collapsed trachea,  luxating patellas  or congestive heart disease.  Chihuahuas can also suffer from certain neurological conditions, dental problems and eye disorders.

The Best Food For Chihuahuas

Chihuahuas are so adorable that they are easy to overfeed, but it’s vital to your dog’s health that you watch their weight.  Obesity in Chihuahuas can drastically shorten their life span and increase the risk of other diseases and joint problems.

Chihuahuas are also often picky eaters, so finding a food that your Chihuahua is happy to eat is important.  Look for dog foods that use wholesome ingredients and are free from by products, chemicals and artificial colors or flavors.

With a wide range of flavors, from Steakhouse Beef and Zucchini to Outback Kangaroo Feast, we’re sure to have a recipe that appeals to even the fussiest of Chihuahuas.

Chihuahuas may need extra love but these little dogs have huge hearts in their tiny bodies and with care, training and love can blossom into wonderful companions.
