Why Salmon is one of the Best Foods for Dogs

Salmon is one of the best things to feed your dogs. Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, Salmon is effective in reducing triglycerides, a type of fat that at high levels, can increase the risk of heart disease. But did you know that Salmon also has other dense nutrients that are beneficial to your dog’s health?

Nutritional breakdown of salmon

The USDA National Nutrient Database’s data said that 3 oz. (85 grams) of cooked Atlantic Salmon contains:

It also provides:

  • 82 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin B12
  • 46 percent of selenium
  • 28 percent of niacin
  • 23 percent of phosphorus
  • 12 percent of thiamin
  • 4 percent of vitamin A

Wild salmon is even more nutrient-dense. It has less fat and calories but has a higher level of protein.

  • 118 calories
  • 3.65 g of fat
  • 0 g of carbohydrate
  • 19.93 g of protein

It also gives:

  • 177 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin B12
  • 64 percent of vitamin D
  • 59 percent of selenium
  • 48 percent of niacin
  • 39 percent of phosphorus
  • 5 percent of thiamin
  • 4.8 percent of vitamin A

Because of its rich nutrient content, salmon has a wealth of benefits, both for adult dogs and puppies alike. While these therapeutic claims have not been approved by any governing body, veterinarians and pet owners still use Salmon as a supplement for the nutritional needs of pets.

Feeding Your Dog

  • Aids brain development

Omega-3 from fish also helps as an additional supplement for brain development, especially for puppies. This is thanks to DHA omega-3, which makes up 90% of the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids found in the brain. It also aids in retinal and cognitive development.

  • Anti-inflammation and skin allergy easing properties

Aside from DHA, the other type of omega-3 is EPA. This is responsible for easing skin allergies by decreasing their body’s production or release of cytokines, stimulators of inflammation.

  • Helps Absorb Fat-Soluble Nutrients

Fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E, and K need to be transported from the body into the intestine, which is something that omega-3 fatty acids can help with by acting as a medium. These vitamins in turn, are responsible for promoting eye, skin, and coat health as well.

  • High Protein Content

Protein is crucial for muscle development. Salmon has a lot of this, making it an essential part of the diet for healthy dogs.

Salmon, like any other fish, needs to be thoroughly cooked before feeding to pets, as it may contain parasites and bacteria that can harm your dogs.

Some of the recommended guidelines for serving salmon include:

  • Cooking fish with a temperature of at least 145° F or 62° C.
  • Debone and remove the fish skin when feeding your dog.
  • Pre-cooked canned salmon is a safe choice but stick with salmon packed in water instead of brine or oil.
  • Avoid smoked salmon as it contains high levels of salt.

Another way to serve salmon

Aside from cooking Salmon for your dogs, you can also take a more convenient option and give them read-made dog food that uses this type of fish as its main ingredient. One of these formulas is Salmon Bleu.

Made with sustainably sourced New Zealand King Salmon, it’s rich in Omega-3 fatty acids that help promote your dog’s skin and coat health. Aside from being nutritious, it also offers a delectable and delicate flavor that dogs will love. Salmon Bleu has no added antibiotics, steroids, and artificial growth hormones.

It also has taurine that dogs need for a healthy heart, and also supplemented with juicy cranberries, blueberries, and raspberries—an abundance of antioxidants, phytochemicals, and flavonoids–beneficial to your dog’s continued health. These ingredients all come together to make a complete and balanced diet.
